After discussing their plans for a new online co-operative database company, we decided to join forces and ultimately formed and began working on the company that became I-Behavior. Lester had started Wunderman Direct, one of the largest direct marketing agencies in the country, and Lynn was a proven direct marketing professional. Through a mutual friend, I met Lester Wunderman and his daughter-in-law Lynn Wunderman. Start-up energy was definitely in the air, and after spending time learning the inner workings of the company, I decided it was time to challenge myself and see if I could actually build something from scratch.Īt, I had learned quite a bit about email marketing, but I knew very little about direct marketing. had a subsidiary company that was focused in email marketing. The opportunity to use my skills to build something and be a part of the internet boom was extremely attractive. I was in the bay area in the late nineties. I had a quick stop as head of business development at an internet company prior to I-Behavior called. After Kidder you joined Mille Capital, a small M&A shop, and then to i-Behavior, your first start-up company. So then you got a lesson in finance you didn’t expect, with the Joseph Jett bond scandal and the sale of Kidder by GE. I was probably fortunate that that in 1994 they over-hired analysts and I was able to join Kidder Peabody. But all the people I met from the I-banks were really smart and engaged. I’d never had an accounting or a finance class. I couldn’t have been more clueless about finance and investment banking at the time. I decided to put law school on hold and interviewed with a variety of companies that came to the University of Michigan. I often joke that the combination of my new interest in business and the fact that I flunked the LSAT (didn't perform up to my expectations) led me down my current path. I did an internship at the World Bank the summer before my senior year of college, and it opened my eyes to the world of business. When I was young, I thought I would study and practice law.
